Underlying Structure and Proportion

I made some studies of bones, muscles and proportions, in my sketchbook. This helped me visualise beneath the skin, and learn about proportion, though I certainly would benefit from deeper study, and have purchased two books about the subject.

Anatomy for Artists: A visual guide to the human form by 3DTotal Publishing

and

Classic Human Anatomy: The Artist’s Guide to Form, Function, and Movement by Valerie L. Winslow.

I learned quite a lot from these studies, when drawing them, and in retrospect. I realised just how symmetrical the human body is, how much variation there is in stature and height, and how this effects the depictions of the body.

I intend to keep on studying the way the bones, tendons and muscles influence the figures I draw, so I can build up a mental reference.
